About Us > Standards > FENSA Part L and FENSA Attention all home owners Since 1st April 2002, all window installations in the UK have had to comply with "Part L" of the Building Regulations. Failure to do so could result in prosecution for both the installer and the home-owner. Safestyle UK makes sealed units with Pilkington energiKare™ Glass which ensures compliance, and through our membership of FENSA (Fenestration Self Assessment Scheme) our customers are assured confirmation of compliance. What was all the fuss about? The Government changed the Building Regulations relating to the energy efficiency of houses and buildings in England and Wales. These changes are covered by the issue of an Approved Document, Part L of the Building Regulations. The objective of Part L is to improve the energy efficiency of housing in the UK and part of this is being achieved by improving the energy efficiency of windows. The document means that all new and replacement glazing is: Controlled by Building Regulations and needs Local Authority Building Control approval before it can be installed. If you do not have approval before fitting replacement windows, then you will be in breach of Building Control and could have to remove the windows and even have difficulty in selling the house. Required to meet higher energy efficiency requirements. Effectively, this means that all windows must have low-e glass fitted as standard and be tested to prove that they are capable of meeting the requirements. It is much more complex than this, but don't panic, Safestyle UK's manufacturing arm had been working on Part L compliance for some time prior to 1st April 2002, and will certify that your installation meets the legal requirements.
