Windows and Doors Recycling

Safestyle helping to reduce our impact on the environmentAt Safestyle UK we’re very conscious of green issues and global warming, and we’re committed to reducing the impact we all have on the environment:

  • Safestyle’s energy efficient products are helping to improve energy efficiency in homes.
  • Our products use Pilkington energiKare™ low-E energy saving technology.
  • Our precise and efficient manufacturing and state-of-the-art machinery produces little or no waste.
  • Our durable PVCu is safe in manufacture, use and recycling, and has less environmental impact than the timber products.
  • We recycle everything that can be recycled, including the windows and doors we replace, minimizing landfill.
  • Our products are also recyclable.

The old windows and doors that Safestyle replaces need to go somewhere - either re-used, recycled or disposed of - and so we’ve put measures in place throughout our company to reduce waste and increase recycling activity.

Safestyle waste reduction and recycling initiativesAs with any large organisation, especially those involved in manufacture and installation like Safestyle, a major part of any energy efficiency initiative relates to what we do with our waste. Waste disposal is a major environmental issue and with landfill sites rapidly decreasing and the costs of disposal increasing on an annual basis, it has become essential for companies to use more efficient methods of waste disposal, embracing recycling wherever possible.

Our double glazing installations operation at Safestyle UK has made major progress through work done, also with the GGF, in order to be accredited British Standard BS 8555 (relating to environmental management systems), which clearly demonstrates our commitment to a greener, environmentally-friendly strategy and work ethic.

Safestyle waste compaction to improve waste disposal efficiencySafestyle produces around 15,000 tonnes of waste per year and in the past it was simply sent to landfill, at considerable cost. However, our new environment-friendly strategy has resulted in dramatic reductions in the amounts of waste sent to landfill and huge increases in the levels of recycling. Our strategy’s main focus has been:

  • Prevention of waste wherever possible.
  • Recovery and re-use of old windows and doors.
  • Recycling of old windows and doors that cannot be re-used.
  • Environmentally-friendly disposal.
  • Reducing the number of skips collected from each installation depot.

Safestyle’s "green" approach is proving to be massively successful. Our installation depots are now set up to recycle several types of recyclate, resulting in the recycling of 6,000 tonnes of glass, 1,200 tonnes of PVCu, 100 tonnes of metal, and 50 tonnes of timber. This is part of the 15,000 tonnes of general waste we recycled last year.

Safestyle waste compaction and recycling to reduce environmental impactAnother major Safestyle development is our use of compactors for all waste not recoverable for recycling, which is done on-site at our installation depots. Traditionally the bulky nature of Safestyle’s waste made it difficult to fill all skips to their maximum weight capacity, which would result in serious inefficiency in waste disposal, but with substantial investment we have equipped our installation depots with compactor machines, and they use these to compact waste and “squeeze” it down to a much smaller size. This has dramatically improved the efficiency of our waste disposal by using the full capacity of each skip, also requiring fewer weekly skip collections for each depot, and this has made a significant impact on the overall environmental and energy efficiency of our depots.

A good example is our Warrington Installation depot which, in 12 months, has reduced its weekly skip collections from 10 to just 4. This has not only allowed Safestyle to save money but we’ve significantly reduced our impact on the environment through less use of transport and fuel.

At Safestyle we are encouraging and rewarding best practice when it comes to increasing energy efficiency and reducing negative environmental impact, and as leaders in the industry we’re encouraging others to follow suit through leading by example. One of our latest ground-breaking energy efficiency campaigns has seen the introduction of our new Diamond Window, which is Energy Saving Recommended as standard - yet another bold step from Safestyle in our continued drive to help customers save energy and money, and reduce the nation’s carbon footprints.

Another ground-breaking product is our GuardDoor composite door range, which has a high-density insulating core almost as thermally efficient as cavity wall insulation, CFC- and HCFC-free, and uses timber from sustainable resources and recycled materials.
