A growing number of consumers are benefiting from cheap energy deals on the internet, a new report has found.

Research by energy regulator Ofgem reveals that around 1.2 million households now use the internet to purchase their energy and, with privatisation having forced firms to become more competitive, many consumers are finding attractive deals.

Chief executive Alistair Buchanan commented: "Suppliers are responding by cutting prices, improving service and developing new energy products to attract and retain customers."

The research also found that one in five households are signed up to fixed-price or other innovative deals, and there is growing demand for environmentally-friendly energy, with nearly 350,000 customers opting for a green tariff.

However, the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has warned that consumers may be undoing their good work by using hi-tech gadgets that use up large amounts of energy.

Few people realise that a plasma screen television can cost up to three times as much as a traditional TV set to run, meaning that this kind of television uses up as much energy as 25 lightbulbs.
