A price comparison website has warned that shopping around can enable consumers to make easy savings in their household finances.

According to moneysupermarket.com, UK adults could save as much as £5,200 over the next year by ensuring they are with the most competitive providers.

One example of this is gas bills, where moneysupermarket.com claims customers could cut their bills by as much as £265.08 just by switching provider.

"People should always review their finances on a regular basis. However, New Year may be just the trigger many need actually to do it," said Stuart Glendinning, managing director of moneysupermarket.com.

"Savings can be significant – a family with a typical financial portfolio could save anywhere up to £5,168.93 over the coming year simply by reviewing their existing finances."

Many people find that installing insulation is another way to cut down on energy bills in the home.
