Nearly half (47 per cent) of homeowners in the UK are planning to make improvements to their home in the UK, according to new research.

A study by moneysupermarket.com revealed that 45 per cent of people believe that the main benefit from home improvements, such as double glazing, is the effect it has on the price of the property – compared to 35 per cent who propose that value is secondary to the improvement itself.

In 20 per cent of cases, the method of financing the work is by applying for credit – such as a loan, credit card or mortgage.

Louise Cuming, head of mortgages at moneysupermarket.com, said: "With house prices having escalated dramatically over the past five years, along with the cost of stamp duty and mortgage fees, many people are turning to home improvement instead."

Last month, a poll of professional property developers by PublicAngel.com revealed a consensus that double glazing, combined with two or three other home improvements, can "easily add" £10,000 to the asking price of a property.

Investing in double glazing is one measure that can help make a home more attractive to buyers.
