Firefighters put out a blaze in Anglesey in the early hours of yesterday morning after a fire was started by an electric heater, according to the local press.

A man and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation in hospital after they were alerted by a smoke alarm to the fire, which was caused by an electric heater too close to the bed.

"A smoke alarm installed by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service during a free home fire safety check activated and alerted the occupants of the fire," News Wales reports community safety manager Mark Jones as saying.

"This proves how vital it is for everyone to have smoke alarms installed in their homes as they will give an early warning of a fire.

"They must be maintained regularly by testing the battery once a week and changing it as per manufactures instruction. This smoke alarm may have saved these occupant's lives this morning."

Fitting fire exit windows and doors is another way to ensure fire safety at home.
