New research from Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans has revealed that the average UK homeowner spends £8,500 on home security.
High-tech security measures are among the most popular devices, with 52 per cent of homeowners professing a willingness to invest in CCTV systems to safeguard their homes.
A similar proportion said they would fork out for motion sensor lights, while 32 per cent wanted a security patrol and 20 per cent felt they needed bars on their doors and windows.
Richard Al-Dabbagh, senior personal loans manager at Alliance & Leicester, said: "It is only natural we should want to protect our homes clearly the best way to do so is to invest in equipment which will either deter or prevent would-be burglars from attempting to break in."
He noted, however, that often "the simplest ways can be the most effective".
Before spending thousands on hi-tech solutions, homeowners are therefore being advised to ensure universally-recognised security measures such as double glazing are first installed.
