The British Insurance Brokers Association, the UK's leading independent insurance body, has drawn attention to the benefits of installing comprehensive home security measures.
Technical services manage Graeme Trudgill said that secure locks and burglar alarms will often save homeowners money on their home contents insurance premiums as they are effective at lowering the likelihood of a property being burgled.
"If you go to your insurance broker they will tell you which alarms or mortise locks or window locks qualify you for discounts," said Mr Trudgill.
He added that it is vital that homeowners check with their insurance company which specific security systems are approved and that they make sure such systems are professionally installed by a qualified alarm fitter or locksmith.
Other popular security measures include installing double glazing in windows and doors, which bolster your dwelling's most vulnerable entry points.
Official government crime statistics reveal that the UK has the highest rate of burglaries anywhere in Europe, with 733,000 incidents being record in a 12 month period between 2005-6.
