Major home improvements including central heating and double glazing are being provided to council house tenants in Birmingham.

According to the city's Birmingham Mail, local authorities have set aside £129 million to be used towards the home improvements.

In addition to the double glazing and heating features, the homes will get new kitchen and bathroom installations, intended by leaders to "bring more council properties into the 21st century".

Jim Nicholl, chairman of the city's housing liaison board, told the newspaper that "decent homes" are a priority for Birmingham tenants.

"This continued investment, particularly with central heating and new windows, will be welcomed and I am sure that tenants will be happy with the news that they will be receiving new kitchens and bathrooms," he stated.

Birmingham is one of the UK's many cities which have until 2010 to meet government targets of ensuring all properties have double glazing and efficient central heating.

A Doncaster couple shelled out on new double glazing and replacement windows this week after their own local authority awarded them £100 in vouchers for filling out a green-themed customer satisfaction survey.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
