Some of Britain's major cities are to be mapped for noise pollution in advance of the European Commission's 2008 environmental noise directive.

Previous research has suggested that Birmingham is one of the UK's noisiest urban areas, with between a quarter and a third of its population being forced to cope with "undesirably high" noise levels.

And it is hoped that the new project will enable researchers to single out other UK noise hotspots, basing their findings on computer software that calculates the impact of sources such as traffic and industrial work.

The World Health Organisation has reported that up to 6,500 deaths are caused in the UK each year by long-term noise exposure.

People concerned about the impact of noise pollution on their health would be well advised to consider investing in double glazing - regarded as being one of the most effective ways of blocking out unwanted noise.
