Brits hold a total of £2 trillion in property equity, according to the latest research by GE Home Lending.
Up to one in four homes across the country is now owned outright - accounting for nearly £1.4 trillion in property wealth - and a further 36 per cent of Brits are now mortgage holders.
The average amount of property equity to a homeowner's name stands in the region of £127,455 - but GE noted significant regional variation across the country.
People in London and the south-east lay claim the largest proportion of property equity, a third of national total. And while northerners have less aggregate equity, they are more likely to own their homes outright.
"It is true that many homeowners have benefited from significant growth in house prices in recent years, but clearly the picture is complex," concluded Gerry Bell, head of mortgage marketing at GE Money Home Lending.
Experts say anyone looking to sell their home should consider green improvements such as installing double glazing insulation, which can significantly increase the value of a dwelling.
