The majority of Brits favour green technologies more for the positive impact they have on their wallet than on the environment.
That's according to Sam Turnbull, co-founder of green advocacy website DownwithCO2.co.uk, who was commenting on the nation's attitude towards energy efficiency in the home.
"One of the big motivators at the moment is still the cost-saving aspect of this issue, rather than concerns about global warming," he said, adding that it can be hard to get homeowners to own up to their true motivation.
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that simply by installing double glazing the average home can save £90 per year through lower energy bills, while also cutting CO2 emissions by 740kg.
And Mr Turnbull pointed out that regardless of whether green homeowners were thinking about their pockets or their environment, the positive impact would be the same.
"It does not make any difference what their motivations are," he insisted. "If they are doing something constructive in this area, then we are all for it."
The government has set targets of making all homes zero carbon by 2016.
