A new survey released by financial services provider intune has revealed a disturbingly lax attitude towards home security among many UK residents.

The study found that over 50 per cent of Brits do not lock up windows and doors securely, leaving homes exposed to the threat of burglary.

Scots appeared to be the least safety conscious, with 56 per of residents north of the border confessing to not securing their home's entry points.

Hard-nosed Londoners, meanwhile, tipped in at the other end of the scale. Exactly two thirds of the capital's residents insisted they never left their doors unlocked.

Excuses for lax security measures ranged from forgetting to lock up to not wanting to cast beloved pets outdoors, but whatever the reasons intune managing director Anne Grahamslaw warns it is a dangerous trend.

"It is important to feel safe in our homes and not have any worries associated with leaving our properties," she told GMTV.

"Based on the findings of our latest research, we would urge people to rethink their home security habits."

Home security experts recommend installing double glazing in doors and windows to bolster your dwelling's most vulnerable entry points.
