Britain is a nation very much reliant on its dogs for security in its homes, according to a new survey.
Despite advances in windows, locks and burglar alarms, many Brits still choose to rely on man's best friend when it comes to safeguarding against burglary, Legal & General (L&G) has revealed.
The insurer polled more than 4,000 adults in the UK and discovered that one in five owns a dog. Of that proportion, one-fifth have installed a burglar alarm, with the rest depending on their pet to keep burglars off the threshold.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal and General's general insurance division, called the results "concerning".
"There are few things in life more important than one's home so homeowners should ensure that their homes are secure by installing more suitable security devices such as burglar alarms [and] good quality door and window locks," she said, adding that such measures can bring about a discount on the cost of home cover.
This week a poll by Good Housekeeping found that 74 per cent of people in the UK feel the nation is a more dangerous place than it was five years ago, with 39 per cent taking steps to increase security at their property.
Installing double glazing and lockable uPVC frames and doors can help make a property more secure against burglary.
