Construction has begun on the winning eco home design from the 2007 Homes of the Future competition, run by the Mail on Sunday.
Eco-specialist architects Gaunt Fran designed the trailblazing home, which it is hoped will set the standard among the nation's construction firms by highlighting the benefits of energy efficient development.
Aptly dubbed Green House, the zero carbon property aims to meet Level 6 of the government's code for Sustainable Homes by embodying a strong emphasis on insulation and thermal efficient technologies.
Externally insulated walls are to carry 180 mm of insulation, while revolutionary new triple glazing and thermally-broken wooden frames will minimise air flow in the property at the same time as maximising the supply of natural light.
Alongside its energy efficient features, other environmental features have also been incorporated into the home such as a rainwater collection system used for flushing water in WCs.
Homebuilder Barratt expects to complete work on Green House in April 2008.
