The threat of burglary remains the number one concern among homeowners, according to a new survey by Saga Home Insurance.

With family security ranking so highly on people's priorities, experts recommend that homeowners bolster security to all entry point in private dwellings.

Double glazing is such way of obstructing unauthorised entry to your home, with the added bonus that it reduces energy waste and lowers heating bills.

According to official Home Office statistics, the threat of domestic burglaries has fallen by 58 per cent since it peaked in the mid nineties.

But that still means a total of 733,000 dwellings were burgled over a 12 month period in 2005/6, the highest levels of anywhere in Europe.

Results from the Saga poll also reflect the changing face of household concerns in the UK, with 82 per cent of respondents also listing identity theft as a major concern.

More traditional concerns, meanwhile, have moved down the list of homeowner priorities.

Barely half of respondents were worried about being uninsured, while the prospect of falling out with the neighbours weighed heavy on the minds of a mere seven per cent of people.
