One leading insurance company has suggested the Christmas holidays are an ideal time for people to install home security systems.

Direct Line warned that opportunistic burglars view the holiday season as their busiest time, especially given the upsurge in spending over the Christmas period and then again during sales in the new year.

With consumers gearing up to spend an estimated £53 billion in December alone, the firm said due care must be taken by all homeowners to ensure that home entry points have adequate defensive measures such as locks and double glazing protection.

"Christmas is a good time to install simple security devices to deter thieves," said Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line. "Many burglaries occur when presents such as electrical goods are left in view of passers-by."

Despite the advice, recent research conducted by Liverpool Victoria found that 68 per cent of homeowners admitted to leaving valuables in full view of their home's windows.
