The Church of England has thrown its weight behind Energy Saving Week, which runs until Sunday October 28th and aims to promote simple and practical ways that householders can reduce energy consumption and curtail their negative impact on the environment.

Dr Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, said that his institution had already been active in promoting greener practices by launching its own carbon-cutting campaign, Shrinking the Footprint.

"Now is the time for individual and collective action in addressing the unsustainable way in which we are exploiting the earth's resources," he said. "Saving energy and cutting carbon emissions must be at the heart of this call to action."

Giving the green movement a religious twist, the bishop expressed his own personal belief that humans have a "responsibility to God" to respect their environment and protect the wellbeing of the planet.

His comments come in the wake of a church-sponsored survey which found that 64 per cent of individuals recognise that they have the potential to do something about climate change.

Energy Saving Week also received public backing yesterday from the Association of Home Information Pack Providers, which recommends that homeowners install double glazing and other green technologies to reduce their CO2 footprint.
