A Manchester college has implemented a series of energy-saving methods, showing it is not lagging behind nearby eco homes, it has been reported.
Mancat has made changes to its 13 campuses and has cut its fuel bill by a third saving £300,000, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Chiefs at the college have installed insulation to offices and lecture rooms and double glazing windows have been fitted.
The college told the paper that the saving would have been much greater if it had not been for the huge rise in energy costs over the past few years.
Principal Peter Tavernor told the paper: "We have [ensured] that our buildings are environmentally friendly and responsive."
Though some of the buildings date back to the 1950s, the latest building on the college's Harpurhey campus has solar panelling that in good weather provides half of the power it needs.
It won a competition run by the Green Organisation charity last month.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that Manchester Methodist Housing Association created a neighbourhood of eco homes in nearby Oldham two years ago.
The state-of the-art homes have wind turbines and solar panels on there roofs.
