The homebuilding industry is gradually coming to terms with government's plans to make all new homes carbon neutral by 2016, according to the Home Builder's Federation (HBF).
John Slaughter, director of external affairs at the HBF, said the target is "a massively challenging objective - but it's one that we've said that we will work with government to our best ability to try and realise".
He called for "a sensible set of progressive improvements in national building regulations which will provide the best framework for the industry to go out and find the best ways of achieving [energy efficiency]".
UK homes are currently responsible for about 27 per cent of the country's carbon emissions and a shocking 60 per cent of all household energy consumption level is attributed to space heating.
The Sustainable Development Commission, an independent government watchdog, is therefore advising homeowners that adequate insulation measures such as double glazing - coupled with efficient heating systems - are crucial to tackling the problem of energy waste.
Double glazing insulation also has the added bonus of bolstering home security and blocking out unwanted street noise.
