The vast majority of UK consumers are concerned about the environment, but few have made any effort to improve their energy efficiency, it has emerged.
A survey commissioned by Hyder Consulting found that 86 per cent of people worry about green issues, but just 27 per cent select environmentally-friendly products when given the choice, the Guardian reports.
The survey also found that only 37 per cent have looked into improving their home insulation and just eight per cent have switched to a green energy tariff, despite the fact that such measures would both improve their green credentials and reduce their energy bills.
Other key findings included fewer than half of respondents taking steps to reduce their water consumption and just 39 per cent having replaced household appliances with more energy-efficient models.
Consumers can improve their energy efficiency by using energy-saving light bulbs and installing double glazing and other forms of home insulation.
In addition, there are a variety of green energy tariffs that allow homeowners to switch to a supplier that provides renewable energy, or that make contributions to environmental projects on a regular basis.
