A county councillor who is one of Cheshire's leading environmental campaigners has decided to take a number of 'green' measures, after discovering his household carbon footprint is 70 per cent higher than the national average.
Andrew Needham discovered that his four-bedroom home produces around 17 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and is now planning to shun foreign holidays, downsize the family's cars and install cavity wall insulation in a bid to reduce his carbon footprint.
"My carbon footprint is almost double the national average, now it's to be holidays in Cheshire, Shropshire and north Wales," he told colleagues at a meeting of Cheshire County Council.
The councillor is also campaigning for individuals to consider their own carbon footprint and to take green measures such as installing insulation and double glazing to improve energy efficiency.
A recent county council report revealed that all sectors of the local community will need to be involved in reducing fuel usage and emissions if targets are to be met and the effects of global warming alleviated.
