Keeping windows and doors in good condition could prevent homeowners from having to shell out over £500 per year, it has been suggested.

According to Glasgow's Daily Record, 60 per cent of British households experienced household emergencies in the last 12 months, but 80 per cent of them had no insurance to cover the average £494 expense.

Just over a fifth needed emergency repairs to their roof, windows or doors in the north of England, which was the highest proportion in any region.

"At a time when many face escalating costs for other household bills - such as mortgage repayments, petrol and energy - people do not want to be surprised with additional costs," emergency expert Jon Florsheim remarked to the newspaper.

Mr Florsheim, who is the chief executive of Homeserve Membership, also pointed out that the UK's plummeting temperatures contributed to a 113 per cent year-on-year rise in boiler breakdowns for the first week of this month.

Energy-saving specialists suggest that individuals take out home contents insurance when they invest in replacement windows, new doors or updated double glazing.

With Energy Efficiency windows supplied as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality double glazed uPVC windows to suit your home.
