More than 3,000 families in Rochdale have enjoyed home improvements as part of a Government scheme to help revitalise the housing market.

The refurbishment work includes fitting double glazing windows, new wall insulation and energy efficient boilers.

Under the Housing Market Renewal programme (HMR), £184 million has been spent on the Oldham/Rochdale scheme. Making the homes eco-friendly was also part of the scheme that is why materials like double glazing windows, cavity wall insulation and energy efficient boilers were fitted to all of the homes that were benefiting from the scheme.

HMR was created in 2002 to tackle problems of housing market failure, where prices had often collapsed and areas were facing widespread abandonment. The HMR is responsible for dealing with the issues that make an area less popular to live in. Most of the time, the HMR will take care of carrying out refurbishment work such as fitting double glazing or installing new energy efficient boilers.

The Oldham/Rochdale projects started in 2004, with 10 areas set to benefit, four of which are in the Rochdale borough — East Central Rochdale, Inner Rochdale, Kirkholt and Langley.

Housing Minister Ian Austin said: “A range of imaginative regeneration projects have already taken place, transforming some much-neglected areas and providing improved housing stock for the communities in those areas. We modernised the houses by fitting new double glazing windows, energy efficient boilers and cavity wall insulation. We also refurbished those homes gardens and sheds in order to make these homes more pleasant to live in.”

Since the beginning of the scheme, there have been 323 new-builds and 3,200 homes have been refurbished. A further 800 properties have been demolished.

Ministers say while there is still work to do the programme has made significant progress in the areas and the money will help bridge the gaps that still remain.
