Southend Council are set to help hundreds of families in the area reduce their energy bills and increase the energy efficiency of their homes by installing double glazing and extra wall insulation. The areas council homes are managed by South Essex homes who have announced new plans to carry out these green home improvements after the provision of Government funding.
All 6500 of Southend’s council homes will potentially have double glazing and improved insulation installed with the council announcing that every flat and house that is suitable will be upgraded. Work is already underway and a number of properties and the chairman of South Essex Home, Phil Lyons, stated:

“We are committed to providing residents with affordable heating.

“These measures can make a big difference and save money on their annual energy bills.

“We all know people are trying to save money wherever they can, and sometimes they turn down the heating.

“These improvements will mean more people’s homes will be heated adequately, while making a difference to household budgets.”

The aim of the improvements is to reduce energy bills for residents and the energy efficiency of homes through improved heat retention. Potentially, new double glazed windows and cavity wall insulation could decrease energy bills by 35 per cent. The improved insulation will provide around a 20 per cent reduction in costs with the double glazing providing a further 15 per cent on top.

Southend residents Bill & Nancy Miller have recently had the improvements completed on their council home and have benefited already, Bill Miller said:

“We are very pleased with the work, especially our new windows.

“It was all done without too much disruption and very quickly and it means we will save money and help the environment, so it’s good all round.”
