Up to 800 Chester and District Housing Trust (CDHT), owned homes in Blacon will be made more energy efficient through loft and wall insulation, external cladding, new boilers and double glazing windows planned for some properties.

Energy chiefs will begin surveying a mix of properties on the estate including high-rise flats, semi-detached and terraced properties later this month to determine measures needed.

Residents will also be given advice on how they can make their homes more efficient through a series of Green Home Assessments.

Working in partnership with CDHT, British Gas will roll out the £70 million energy efficient programme over the next three years. A major part of these funds will be spent on fitting double glazing and cavity wall insulation to the homes.

The project is part of the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP), which is a joint initiative between the government, energy suppliers and power generators that will see a total of £350 million worth of energy efficiency measures over three years. British Gas will be spending about £70 million across 10 UK-wide projects. These energy energy efficiency measures will also include fitting double glazing and cavity wall insulation.

Dave Soothill, CDHT assistant director - asset management and development, said: “This is brilliant news for CDHT customers and will make a real difference too many residents who live in fuel poverty but still want to do their bit for the environment. We are already investing heavily in energy efficient materials like double glazing to make our homes more sustainable and this partnership with British Gas will continue this work.”
"Residents in the properties receiving the improvements will be delighted that not only will their homes be more energy efficient, but will also be more comfortable to live in. We look forward to working with British Gas to maximise the benefits of the project.”

Chester MP Christine Russell said: “I’m delighted that Blacon has been chosen as one of the pilot areas for the Community Energy Saving Programme. This is an area where fuel poverty is a real problem and I’m sure that this is going to make a real difference to the quality of life of many people living there.”
