Home improvements and green homes could be worth up to £6.5 billion to builders suffering the effects of the credit crunch, it has been reported.
A new Federation of Master Builders (FMB) report - entitled Building a Greener Britain - found home improvements to boost homes energy -efficiency levels may inject an extra £3.5 billion to £6.5 billion to the struggling industry.
Brian Berry, the FMB's director of external affairs, told Contract Journal the association's members insist they have enough work to see them through until the end of the year but many others are considering early retirement.
"What is particularly encouraging for builders is that at a time when the sector is suffering a downturn as a result of the credit crunch, there is a potential new market worth at least £3.5bn a year," he added.
It is proposed in the report the renovation market be linked to Energy Performance Certificates.
The FMB claims to be the UK building industry's largest trade association representing more than 13,000 companies nationwide.
