A Leicester home dubbed The Eco House has been set up to show people they can all save money while protecting the planet, it has been reported.

The former park keeper's cottage in Weston Park is run by environmental charity Groundworks as a demonstration of energy-efficient-living, according to the Melton Times.

It has been running for nearly 20 years but a renewed interest in eco homes and self-conscious green living has attracted a new wave of visitors over the last four years.

Caroline Harmon, the Eco House's development officer, said the house was a flagship project to show that people can do something to help the planet.

"Climate change is a big issue at the minute and it's something we need to tackle as the earth's temperature is rising and one of the consequences of that are we will see a lot of freak weather," she concluded.

The house is packed full of features that could be implemented at its visitor's green homes.

It boasts double glazing windows, a composting toilet, automatic taps and skylights to save on lighting.

Formerly known as Environ, Groundworks claims to have a long track record of pioneering environmental action dating back to 1983 and was instrumental in Leicester being designated as Britain's first Environment City.

- With Energy Efficiency windows supplied as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality double glazed windows to suit your home.
