New research from insurance and investment firm Legal & General has found that 85 per cent of homebuyers in the UK would consider purchasing an eco-friendly property.
The report, entitled the Changing Face of British Homes, also notes that 59 per cent of homeowners would consider buying a property with solar panels, and four out of ten want an entirely carbon neutral home.
It comes after the prime minister's announcement on Monday that he plans to double his eco-towns target, part of an ambitious plan to make all new homes zero-carbon by 2016.
"There is clearly a demand for the green homes proposed by Gordon Brown, showing the environmental agenda is starting to influence the choices people make with respect to their homes," commented Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for Legal & General.
The prime minister's new green homes proposal this week received glowing endorsements from eco-construction groups such as the Town and Country Planning Association.
Each of the sustainable eco-towns is expected to include up to 100,000 green properties and will employ the latest energy-conserving techniques to minimise their negative impact on the environment.
