New research from Alliance & Leicester has revealed that homeowners who invest in green technologies will reap the dividends in the long term.
The study notes a wide range of ways to increase the energy efficiency of your dwelling, thereby lowering your carbon footprint and cutting back on costly utility bills.
Among the simplest measures is switching to energy efficient light bulbs - which use 75 per cent less electricity and can save £65 each over the course of their lifetime - but other technologies were shown to reap even larger benefits.
Cavity wall insulation is one of the most popular ways of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, lowering heating costs by about 15 per cent and so saving the average homeowner more than £100 each year.
And other popular green improvements also translate into big savings, such as double glazing, loft insulation, solar energy and wind turbines.
Government statistics reveal that the new homes are on average 40 per cent more energy efficient than those built before 2002 and 70 per cent more so than in 1990.
