While two of the 'big six' energy suppliers have made cuts to their gas and electricity prices, there is still a long way to for customers before they can recoup what they have been paying, according to one price comparison website.
SimplySwitch.com called reductions by Powergen and npower "a step in the right direction", but said that most people will still be paying too much for their energy.
"Energy bills are falling but the gap between the cheapest and most expensive tariffs is higher than ever before – households could easily save up to £200 a year by switching," said Karen Darby, founder of SimplySwitch.com.
Powergen reduced gas prices by 16 per cent and electricity by 5 per cent, while npower made respective cuts of 16 per cent and three per cent.
According to Sainsbury's Bank, the average home in the UK will pay £595 on gas and £383 on electricity in 2007.
Heating costs and utility bills can be reduced by installing double glazed windows and doors.
