UK households are being offered simplified access to home insulation as part of Energy Saving Day (E-Day), which began yesterday evening.

Set up by a collection of organisations including the National Grid and the country's power companies, the experiment is intended to encourage eco homes and take on climate change in a fun and "evidence-based" manner.

Energy companies including EDF, E.On and National Power are available for advice on loft and cavity wall insulation throughout the day, while people are also being asked to turn off electrical appliances that are not in use.

"I'm delighted by the way in which so many organisations from all sectors of society have been prepared to see what they can do to help tackle climate change," E-Day organiser Matt Prescott told BBC News.

The dawning of E-Day marks a significant national acknowledgement of the energy that is lost nationwide through poor insulation and unused electrical appliances.

Residents of the West Yorkshire borough of Kirklees recently went even further by creating an interactive thermal map to highlight just how much heat is wasted in a house with inadequate insulation.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
