Insulation and other home improvements have helped one couple reduce their energy use to half the average, the Observer reports.
Two years ago, Steven Jones and his wife Claire Butcher used twice as much energy as they should have done for their house.
Insulation of the loft with Thermafleece, replacing their washing machine with an energy efficient one and installing secondary double glazing have all helped.
Mr Jones told the newpaper he believes he has spent less than £2,000 on the home improvements, having had energy efficiency grants and comparing prices.
He said the household's meter readings had "dropped dramatically".
The couple lives in a two-bedroom terrace house in Southampton with their two-year-old son George.
After George was born, they built an office on the back of their house out of wood, insulating it with sheep's wool.
The Independent recently published advice to help keep fuel costs down.
It suggested switching energy supplier, draughtproofing and proper insulation.
