Attempts to make aircraft more environmentally friendly will result in increased levels of noise pollution, it has been claimed.
With many homeowners situated near local airports having already invested in noise reduction technologies in an effort to resolve the problem, easyJet has said that its efforts to cut carbon emissions will result in noisier jets being used.
Open rotor engines that will generate half the carbon dioxide of current easyJet planes, the firm has claimed.
"There is a trade-off between noise and carbon dioxide emissions. We think reducing CO2 should be the priority," commented easyJet chief executive Andy Harrison.
"We at easyJet think that global warming is a near certainty and that this generation need to take action now," Mr Harrison added.
Research published last month found that 70 per cent of householders were annoyed by noise in their neighbourhoods, with 45 per cent saying it had a significant effect on their lives.
