Householders are starting to take the energy-efficiency message on board, the Energy Retail Association (ERA) has claimed.

And according to Duncan Sedgwick, head of the ERA, Scotland is leading the way, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

While a poll by the Home Heat Helpline revealed that 22 per cent of residents in the Scottish capital do not know where to go for advice on making their homes greener, Mr Sedgwick said the establishment of such a helpline indicated that Scotland was taking the issue seriously.

He said: "Energy is the hot topic of the moment. It's pretty impossible to open a newspaper and not see something on energy pricing, global warming, fuel poverty etc."

Last month, research by uSwitch revealed that 79 per cent of people in the UK do not feel that they have been given enough information on making their home more energy-efficient.

One way in which people can save household energy is by installing double glazing.
