Officials have opened one of the UK's first shared-ownership eco homes in Yorkshire.

Housing minister Caroline Flint handed over the keys to the building, which features ultra-modern double glazing and insulation to prevent heat loss and save energy.

Fran Hartley, who will part-buy and part-rent the Illingworth property with her partner, told the Halifax Evening Courier that she had been trying to get a foot on the housing ladder for the past two years.

She went on to point out that as the house has been specially designed to meet the government's sustainable construction standards, it is expected to use around 46 per cent of the carbon of a normal house.

"It is not just London and the south-east where people have difficulty getting on to the property ladder, which is why the government is putting so much money into schemes of this type," noted Ms Flint.

The housing minister pointed out that the energy-saving qualities of the house's double glazing will make it easier for Fran and her partner to meet the rising costs of heating and fuel.

Earlier this month, environment secretary Hilary Benn unveiled plans to further boost the creation of green homes in the UK, with around £100 million to be given to the Energy Saving Trust to help deliver the programme.
