The housing minister has called for Oxford residents to give their support to a new eco homes development.

Chatting to the Oxford Mail after a visit to the area this week, Caroline Flint said the proposed Weston-on-the-Green project would provide thousands of affordable properties.

She acknowledged opposition to the eco homes scheme, located south of Bicester.

"I understand people's concerns, but we have to recognise we haven't built enough homes over the last 30 years and Oxford is one of the most expensive cities in the country," Ms Flint remarked to the paper.

"We need to have an informed debate about the proposed eco-town and we will listen to people's concerns."

Objections from Bicester businesses to the eco homes development have centred on a potential "drain" on the local jobs market.

Planning officials are currently exploring the possible positive and negative social and economic effects the new eco homes town would have on Bicester.
