The Federation of Master Builders is drawing attention to the substantial savings that can be enjoyed by investing in insulation.
In a new publication - the Essential Guide to Home Improvement - the trade association stresses that alongside the environmental benefits of reducing CO2 emissions, lower energy consumption also translates into lower bills for homeowners.
The federation's director of external affairs, Brian Berry, said: "It's not just new-build eco homes which can be green - for a small investment efficiency improvements can be easily added to any building."
"Homeowners should think about asking their builder to increase insulation as part of their next renovation project," he added. "They'll benefit from year-on-year utility bill savings, as well as doing their bit to help the environment."
He noted that loft insulation can pay for itself in less than a year while installing floor insulation takes just four years to become financially self-serving.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, meanwhile, double glazing can be one of the most significant ways of reducing heat loss as it cuts the average home's CO2 emissions by 740kg and leads to an annual saving of £90.
