A new range of eco homes are to be built at the site of a former army barracks in Chichester, it has emerged.
Following its sale to national regeneration agency English Partnerships, the Roussillon Barracks will be developed into a dedicated green homes 'town'.
Previously inhabited by the Royal Military Police, the site's new eco homes are intended to help ease a shortage of affordable housing stock in the area.
"Roussillon Barracks offers an opportunity to redevelop a redundant brownfield site and provide high quality housing and a sustainable new community close to Chichester city centre," confirmed David Ashworth, English Partnerships' area director for the south-east.
He went on to point out that 800 eco homes are planned for the new 'village', which will have its own shops, a school, art and cultural facilities and transport links.
The green homes will be designed to generate as much energy as they use without burning fossil fuels, making the project a pioneer of government plans to have all new homes built in England zero-carbon by 2016.
Some carbon-cutting features of the new eco homes revealed by English Partnerships include improved insulation, rainwater harvesting systems, environmentally-friendly building materials and waste management schemes to be implemented during the construction process.
With Energy Efficiency products supplied as standard, home owners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality double glazed external doors to suit your home.
