Police are offering householders in the Moreland area of Gloucester free security checks on their homes this week.

Officers specially trained in crime-reduction techniques are taking bookings to assess how vulnerable local residents' dwellings are to opportunistic burglars.

PC Kevin Ireland, one of the Forest and Gloucester division's crime reduction officers, said: "This is a good opportunity to check the level of security in your home and we will give you free advice on how to improve things without breaking the bank.

"The chances of becoming a victim of burglary are slim; however, people should not be complacent and there are some very simple measures you can take to make yourself safer."

The awareness drive aims to encourage the up-take of technologies such as shed alarms, reinforced locks and double glazing windows - all of which act as deterrents to would-be burglars.

It is being organised in conjunction with the Home Office as part of Not in my Neighbourhood Week, which highlights the positive work local agencies are doing to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
