Household energy consumption can be reduced by investing in "great" windows and "super" insulation, according to one set of environmental experts.

Planet-conscious pundits at US publication The Providence Journal suggested that energy conservation begins before a house is even built - in the planning of construction materials to be used.

However, they noted that home improvements such as replacement windows are a valid consideration for anyone keen to save both money and energy.

Green construction expert Dan Paquette told the publication that a further advantage to such renovations is "a less drafty house with improved air quality".

He added that building firms have increasingly improved technical means of approaching energy conservation: "Super insulation, great windows, mechanical systems and whole-house ventilation systems - we can build energy-efficient, tight houses that are very comfortable."

At a recent eco homes seminar in the UK, window manufacturers and advisers got together to outline how to maximise the use of upvc windows in the construction of green homes, particularly in the wake of official window energy ratings and the government's code for sustainable building.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
