UK residents can 'energy-proof' their green homes without spending a lot of money, according to experts at the Energy Saving Trust.

Zoltan Zovody, strategy manager for the organisation, has pointed out that significant savings can actually be made by adding or improving existing insulation.

"We have worked out that homeowners can save up to £250 a year off their fuel bills by following our top tips such as adding insulation, turning down your thermostat by one degree and using energy-efficient bulbs," he explained.

Mr Zovody went on to suggest that simple steps such as putting a jacket on one's water tank can be as effective as cavity wall or loft insulation, while he also noted that a range of grants are now available to planet-conscious home improvements enthusiasts.

Data from the National Insulation Association suggests that around 40 per cent of all the heat lost in the average home is a result of drafty loft spaces and walls.

The Energy Saving Trust has predicted that if all the houses with unfilled cavity walls had them kitted out with adequate insulation, the energy saved could heat 1.4 million homes every year.

Double glazing is proven to save heat and energy lost through poorly-insulated windows and doors. With Energy Efficiency windows and doors as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
