Rigorous environmental standards for green homes in the UK have been proposed by the housing minister.

Caroline Flint laid out a progress report on the development of towns dedicated to eco homes across the country, emphasising that only the "best quality" schemes will qualify for eco-town status.

"These would be the toughest standards ever set out for new development and demonstrate that there will be no compromise on quality with eco-towns," she remarked.

"We need to build more homes in this country, but given that housing contributes 27 per cent of our carbon emissions we must also take this opportunity to trial new ways of tackling climate change," she continued.

"In both cases, doing nothing is not an option."

The standards for green homes and buildings will include a requirement for "zero carbon" status across a town, as well as considerations regarding transport and public facilities.

Just this week, plans for a new green homes site in Blackpool were submitted to the council for planning consideration.

According to the Blackpool Citizen, Kensington Developments' £150 million scheme could see 640 eco homes built in the city.
