Self-builders are leading the way in the creation of green homes in the UK, according to new research.
In a study carried out by solar heating provider Velux, it was discovered that an increasing number of such individuals are incorporating energy-saving technologies in their new buildings.
Representatives for the firm suggested that as ten per cent of the new-build properties coming onto the market are in the self-build sector, it is this small group which is taking the boldest steps towards carbon-neutral housing.
"Almost without exception, everyone in this group now incorporates a range of eco-techniques and technologies such as solar energy, wall and roof insulation and rainwater harvesting throughout the building process," explained Kevin Brennan, head of sustainability for Velux.
He noted that reduced fuel bills and associated running costs in the longer term, brought about as a result of homes' improved energy efficiency, provide ample motivation for the effort to create green homes.
Under current government plans, two million new homes are to come onto the market by 2016, with a further one million eco homes to be established before 2020.
