Environmentalists are calling for a redesign of the Government's green homes plans, it has been reported.
A report by the Eco-Towns Challenge Panel attacked the proposals saying they resembled housing estates with green homes elements "added on", according to the BBC.
Environmental groups supported by Dame Judi Dench and John Nettles agree with the panel and say the eco homes are not green enough.
According to one group (The Campaign to Protect Rural England), the eco-towns will generate a worrying amount of extra traffic and the homes should be built within existing cities.
"We think there's going to be an awful lot of car journeys involved in these towns because they are going to be commuter-styled towns to major conurbations," spokeswoman for the group, Marina Pacheco said.
Meanwhile, housing minister Caroline Flint defended the green homes plans during a commons debate this week.
She said they offer a unique opportunity to address the housing shortage while tackling climate change.
Gordon Brown kicked off his term as prime minister with a pledge to build 100,000 green homes.
