Green homes to be built in proposed eco-towns will not only help address climate change while tackling the housing shortage but will trigger economic growth in certain parts of the country, one government minister has said.
In a heated debate last week, Housing minister Caroline Flint told parliament the eco-towns would form part of a solution to tackle the lack of houses due to the growing ageing population and will bring jobs to the town's locations.
Gordon Brown's target of building 100,000 eco homes has been under attack from the opposition this month with shadow housing minister Grant Shapps branding the plans a "farce".
Meanwhile, 24dash.com reported earlier in the month the Chartered Institute of Housing has called on Mr Brown's government to establish a green homes target for its existing social housing stock.
The body was speaking in Harrogate at its annual conference and exhibition which was attended by 6,500 delegates including the housing minister.
