The new Coalition Government has released details of a new energy bill that will empower all energy customers as well as make sure competition amongst providers remains fair. The new bill states that energy providers will be forced to tell consumers if a cheaper tariff is available than the one they are currently on meaning savings are going to be readily available to everyone.

The Government also wants to start a green investment bank with the capability of loaning every household money towards green home improvements such as solar generators, improved insulation and double glazing.

The new plans are aimed at increasing energy efficiency in homes around Britain, to increase the awareness of low-carbon energy generation and microgeneration and just generally reduce energy costs for consumers.

The bill has been entitled the 'Pay as You Save' scheme and means households could borrow money to improve the energy efficiency of their home and then pay back the money using what they have saved on their energy bills.

We are still waiting on details of exactly how the scheme would work but in the pre-election warm up the Conservatives suggested loans of around £6500 would be available to every home and the Lib Dems suggested a higher figure of £10,000.Also laid out in the plans is the intention to reform energy markets to ensure fair competition as well as security of supply.

With full details yet to emerge, the proposed new policies and legislation look like a really positive step and will provide a boost to customers looking to save money as well as providers of energy efficient home improvements such as double glazing.
