Over the last 3 months and despite the ‘Big Freeze’ and coldest winter in over 30 years, the average gas bill in the UK has fallen by 2 percent. The average gas bill for over eight million homes that British Gas supply has dropped to £373 from the £381 average at this time last year.
It is believed that this is mainly down to the increase in households investing in energy-efficient home improvements such as double glazing, new boilers and improved insulation. These technologies and improvements have helped to keep energy usage down despite the bitter cold outside.
Fears were rife in Britain following the cold snap that heating bills would be enormous and fuel poverty would carry on increasing. This was exacerbated by a number of energy companies seeing it as an opportunity to raise prices. As expected, gas consumption did rise but nowhere near as much as expected, the managing director of British Gas Phil Bentley stated:
"It was a very, very cold winter, a 1-in-30 event, which pushed up volumes but less than our models would have suggested, and we have data going back a long time,”
"We are seeing the benefit of underlying energy efficiency measures, with half a million new boilers installed across the UK in the last year alone and more than one million homes putting in better insulation.”
Despite the fall in energy prices, energy efficiency and reducing bills is something everyone has to take into account. Double glazing in conjunction with other green and energy efficient home improvements will save you a significant amount on your bills.
