Over the weekend, the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) announced a new £3 million plan to improve the energy efficiency of Britain’s homes.

The public-private partnership is Government backed and will begin with a two year effort aimed to identify how the refurbishment and retrofitting of homes can be accelerated through ‘industrialising’ the design, supply and implementation process.

At the moment, homes are the biggest source of CO2 producing 24 per cent of all emissions and need a radical overhaul to hit the Government target of and 80 per cent reduction by 2050. Energy efficient improvements need to be made 1.8 million homes per year between now and 2020 to meet 2020 targets which will be a huge task. The new ETI scheme will try and make this achievable by creating a top-to-bottom process that will start with identifying the most cost-effective improvements for a property and a method of ensuring the these improvements achieve the promised savings.

Dave Clarke, the CEO of ETI said:

“Persuading consumers to take-up refurbishment and technology retro-fit opportunities requires us to address the challenge of creating supply-chains and delivery routes which consumers trust and they consider affordable,”

The project will be undertaken by a consortium of companies whose aim it is to produce a model of for energy efficient refurbishing and retrofitting that can be followed on all levels from local to national.
