One of the world's leading eco homes has been built on the UK's most northerly inhabited island off the coast of Scotland, it has been reported.

A unique green home that is powered solely by wind turbines and solar power has been constructed by retired couple Michael and Dorothy Rea.

The Shetland island of Unst hosts the £200,000 three-bedroom zero-carbon home that is set to boast a greenhouse full of lemon trees and grapevines.

In order to get around the island the couple will use an electric car that will be powered by the island's harsh 100mph winds, according to The Daily Record.

Mrs Reas, 65, a former headteacher, told the publication that she had waited 24 years for the house to be built but played down the rare property saying it is "just a standard house, nothing fancy".

"What's very special is they're trying to address the carbon impact of their whole lifestyle," Duncan Price, director of green energy consultancy ESD added.

Meanwhile, in a revolutionary move for eco homes, a honeycomb-shaped eco house in a Cotswold nature reserve sold for a world-record fee of £7.2 million last month.

With Energy Efficiency products supplied as standard, homeowners can now save even more on their heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Visit the Safestyle website to see a range of top quality double glazed doors to suit your home.
